togetherness

so, tommy is currently not working. he got laid off on monday and tuesday was his last day.
[for anyone that does not know us personally, i am totally freaked out about this, but it is not as truly as horrifying as it seems. tommy is a union electrician, so he does have lots of leads and the backing of a union. thank god. however, the idea that neither one of us has a legitimate income right now is quite overwhelming. somewhat comparable to finding out you are having twins at 20 weeks when you currently have a 6 year old, 2 year old and 9 month old.]
if you do the math, you will see that tommy has been home for two days. so far, his half empty coffee cup which has been left on the counter in front of the coffee pot has been knocked over twice. mine has never been knocked over because i...a) finish my coffee and b) put the empty coffee in the sink.
now i am off to try school uniforms on thomas and jack to see what we need to buy for this year.
good times...good times...

  1. A piece of back to school money advice..

ignore the supply list. See what the teacher ends up really whining that she needs. We do not send in kleenex or wipes unless the kids actually get asked for them by their teacher. And..

The teachers put way more on the list than they even need. I have tried to tell them that the parents should just get a list of the absolute essentials. Not stuff that they "might" need. SO wait! Wait until asked for it. I have not even bought a new pencil yet. We have a few and a couple decent notebooks from last year. They do not need new notebooks and bookbags.

.... I am sorry for his job loss.

  2. Thats good advice up there...and I totally agree. I buy bare minimum school supplies to make the kids feel equipped but not overloaded. Also, I wait until halfway thru the year to offer the Kleenex cause' that's about the time they run out of all the stuff the other people brought in.

Tell the truth...did you knock over Tommy's coffee cup to maybe get a point across? Cause I totally would. *snicker* =)~

  3. I'm really sorry to hear this. I'm sure his leads will pay off shortly, and it's great to know this in your head. But it doesn't keep your heart from screaming bloody murder. Right up until the day the first new paycheck is cashed.

Here's to a quick and productive job search...!

  4. My husband's last day of work (before the move) was yesterday, and today was our first packing day together. It was, shall we say, "tense." :) Hope things are back to normal soon!

  6. My hubby lost his job 1 1/2 years ago, the very beginning of the crisis as he was in construction. It is hard, especially now that we have switched roles and I work while he is home with the kids. It is also scary and a difficult transition for him who was the provider. But for your children you figure out a way to make it work even if you aren't always sure what the next step is.

  7. I'm am always the stress ball over here and it's so easy to say to live "one day at a time".....but I've been saying it over and over in my head lately and it really does help....on a lot of different levels!!

  9. I went on two week long trips within 3 weeks with my family, and while I was fine with the kids - the big guy really started to grate on my nerves! Sorry about the layoff, it's sucks to be uncertain at any time. Hang in. Oh, and I knew you'd have my back on the kid leash thing. Notice the one person who spoke up for it has only one child (it's my sister, that's how I know)

  10. Oooh...my husband works from home sometimes. They have no place being in the house during the day. It's disruptive. Tee hee....I hope things pick up soon! I'll be thinking of you.

  11. Oh no, I am so sorry he lost his job. I really hope he finds something soon...for your sanity as well...I know it drives me nuts when my husband is home for days on end. I'm all, "So, when are you leaving again???"

  12. It's funny how they don't think about the things that we do because they aren't typically home on a day to day basis. I hope your hubs lands something soon!!

  13. I hope something turns up for you guys! You are in my prayers. I think way too many of us are in this boat. Everything is just kinda BLAH. But as you said he has the union. I know if Chad lost his job....yikes O LA. He already was laid off once, I don't think we can take another. Best of luck and keep us updated, I will be praying for you guys.
